The Benefits of Furry Friends in the Workplace

You either love dogs or you don’t (but how can you not?). My dog Skittles has been my BFF for almost 18 years! I couldn’t imagine life without her and the vast amount of entertainment. If you’re a dog lover, you may be aware of the physical, emotional and mental health benefits of owning a pet. Puppies can decrease stress, improve your mood, AND you get more exercise! Not to mention companionship, even if it’s a one-way convo. Plus they are just so cute.

Benefits of Puppies in the Workplace

With all these known benefits, some workplaces are actually becoming more pet-friendly. If you are lucky enough to have a pet-friendly office or work from home with your pooch, you may just be more productive! In celebration of National Dog Week this week, here are some positive impacts of pet-friendly workplaces.

  • Decreased stress, cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Increased dopamine and serotonin
  • Increase in productivity from both owners and non-dog owners
  • More collaboration and social activities

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Not all dogs have the right temperament to be in the office and not all offices allow pets. But if yours does – take advantage! This will take some degree of self-control though. You can’t pet the dog for the entire day and expect to be productive still. Office puppy or no office puppy, it’s really important to take breaks throughout the work day. Continuing to work with no breaks actually makes you less productive. Whether you take a break to pet a cute puppy or go take a 5 minute walk, this is all good for your productivity. If you have your own canine friend at home you have all those great benefits to look forward to. In addition to the constant walks you will be forced to go on.

Tips for Increasing Productivity and Collaboration

So you may not be able to have a furiend in the office. How else can you increase productivity and collaboration in your workplace? Have a few people in charge of social activities and plan some things like lunch or drinks out. Maybe share some funny memes or stories through email. People are more productive when they feel connected at work and able to have some fun too.

What are your thoughts on this trend? Would you take your puppy to work with you if you could? Let me know in the comments below!

I’m also happy to share this infographic below courtesy of PuppySpot that outlines the benefits of having a pet-friendly workplace. Enjoy!
